yes you can, ST has many shortcuts to select text. Once you know how to select a word, the current line you're on, or all the text within brackets, just use ctrl + shift + W and type whatever tag you want to use. Ex. i select a line (ctrl + L) and then press (ctrl + shift + w) and then type 'div' and the line i had selected is now wrapped in 'div' tags. very useful once you know the shortcuts

This is true, but it takes time working with any language to learn the ins and outs, the tricks and the pitfalls, the best practices and what to avoid, in order to become an effective developer with any given language.

Any developer can pick up a book on any language and learn that new language. It takes time to become effective though. I think it's worth to understand that distinction between a developer who can program with language x, and a developer who can program with language x effectively.

Thanks for sharing! I totally agree that passion is important. I would also add "hard-working" to the subset of features of a great programmer :). I believe a hard-working person with little passion can outperform a passionate programmer who would like to tackle only interesting and cool technologies/programming languages. I only disagree that a passionate programmer in technology X can do instantly great in technology Y. Every technology has its quirks and learning them can take a whole lot of time. One person not knowing how a particular tool works can spend few days trying to solve a problem, which is simple for a pro in that domain.

I decided many years ago that I was a Java developer. Not because I thought Java was the end-all, be-all of creation but because it was a capable and cross platform (as much as anything is) language and I wanted to be an expert at something rather than mediocre at a lot of things. This doesn´t mean I limit myself to Java. It means that if itś not Java and not something I am particularly interested in, I insist on getting paid to learn it. Helps cut down on the noise. Scala is my current interest outside of Java.

Great article and something that I have thought about from time to time. It is true, there is always so much to keep up with if you want to keep up with new things. Unless of course your the type of developer who is fine with what they already know, but I think the majority of us prefer the former. And there is nothing wrong with staying in your current comfort zone, but it will ultimately limit you with employment in the future.

I know this will be hard for some to believe, but I had a typo in my file - causing the order of the last 2 items to be inverted.

Also, I had forgotten that while testing something else, I had checked the 'Order methods alphabetically' checkbox in the Eclipse preferences panel for MXUnit.

So,all is good now, and working as expected.

Just grabbed the latest from GitHub and got rid of the error.

Question for you, is this only for running tests in a browser or also in the Eclipse Plugin?

I tried this in both and neither worked as expected. The Eclipse plugin still ran them in alphabetical order. The .cfm page I set up to run test in browser ran the first 2 of 4 tests in the specified order, but the last 2 were inverted.

I am getting an error when adding this and trying to refresh the list of test in the Eclipse plugin.

The error is saying that it cannot find the component named mxunit.utils.BubbleSort. I tried re-downloading 2.1.1 from mxunit.org and there does not appear to be a 'utils' folder in the code anywhere - though I do see it on GitHub.

Great post Ryan! I also switched between Coda and CFEclipse pretty often and liked Coda for the speed and CFEclipse for the suggestions. But when you think about it, the suggestions don't really help that much. At my current job, I started with PyDev (Eclipse) but it's suggestions were not always accurate and it sort of slowed me down.

I have now switched to Vim - and there are parts that take longer, but in the bigger picture, I think it is more advantageous since it forces me to know where different pieces of code exist (as in which file it lives in). In my opinion, it makes you a better programmer since you are more familiar with the entire codebase rather than relying on the IDE's intelligence. I want to look into emacs but still busy trying to master Vim. Sublime Text 2 is really slick and an awesome development tool but I am trying to be entirely reliant on a terminal interface (so all I need is SSH access) and because of that, I am focusing on Vim for the moment.

@Grant, I'm no expert in merging another remote with local either but I can give you a start. First, if you haven't already done so you'll need to add my repository as another remote to your local. To do so open up a command prompt or terminal and go into the main directory of the Koans. Then type in "git remote add upstream git://github.com/bittersweetryan/ColdFusion-Koans.git" which will add a link to the master repository. At this point I'd add and commit or stash the changes you are working on. Now create a new branch to pull the code from my repository into "git checkout -b 'mergeUpstream'". Now you can do a "git pull upstream master" to bring in the changes. This will most likely fail or create some conflicts because I added the ordering around the same time you added new tests. This is where I'd seek the help of a GIT master because I'm not all that great at resolving conflicts in git just yet.

Great post! I just finally got tired of Eclipse getting slower and slower. It's funny now to crank up Eclipse and try to wor. I'm amazed at how slow it is compared to Sublime + CLI. Another nice thing about Sublime is most of the configuration is easily editable - so if a shortcut doesn't work for you - you can easily tweak it. Unfortunately, that doesn't quite work. For instance, within a LI line, when I use ctl-shift-w (Mac), it wraps ColdFusion with P tags. That's totally wrong. When I use that, it should let me decide which tag to wrap it with, not use P each and every time I use ctl-shift-w.
